The International Human Rights Lecture is the signature event of The Mary Robinson Centre, bringing global leaders and international voices to local communities. This year’s guest speaker will be Ernesto Zedillo, who follows in the footsteps of Hina Jilani, Graça Machel and Professor Muhammad Yunus - all of whom have been members, alongside Mrs Robinson, of The Elders group of independent global leaders established by the late Nelson Mandela to work together for peace and human rights.
Ernesto Zedillo is a Mexican economist and politician who served as the President of Mexico from 1994 to 2000, and has been an active member of The Elders for the past 10 years. He implemented economic reforms and helped stabilise the Mexican economy after the 1994 financial crisis. Following his term in office, Ernesto Zedillo has been serving as the Director of the Center for the Study of Globalization at Yale University since 2009. In addition to his administrative role, he teaches courses on trade theory and policy, as well as the economic development and challenges of Latin American and Caribbean nations in the context of globalisation.
President Zedillo has dedicated himself to seeking solutions to some of the most urgent issues that confront the global community. To give a few examples, he joined the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPR), and he serves on the Global Commission on Drug Policy, co-founded by Elder Emeritus Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
During his time as a member of The Elders, Zedillo has advocated for global security and peace, speaking out on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He has participated in numerous Elders' delegations to address human rights and security issues, as well as geopolitical concerns, including visits to China, Ethiopia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. Zedillo has also represented The Elders at various multilateral forums, including the UN General Assembly and the Munich Security Conference.
