Ballina is officially one of the Top 3 Greenest towns in Ireland

We’re thrilled to announce that Ballina have been named one of the top two finalists in Ireland’s Greenest Places 2025 competition—recognized alongside Louisburgh, Co. Mayo. This distinguished accolade comes from the prestigious Ireland's Greenest Places initiative, run by The Irish Times.

What is the competition?
Launched in mid-2025, Ireland’s Greenest Places encourages public nominations of towns, villages, suburbs, or communities making concrete strides in sustainability. From hundreds of entries, a longlist of 26 was narrowed to 14 finalists across four categories—suburb, village, town, and community. Each entry represents more than just green ambitions; they embody collective action and tangible environmental results.

What this means for us
Being ranked among the top two greenest towns in Ireland is a testament to our community’s unwavering commitment to environmental excellence. Whether through initiatives like planting native trees, fostering biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions, or creating green public spaces, our collective passion and persistence shine through.
This recognition is more than an honor—it’s an invitation to build on our efforts. As a finalist, we join Louisburgh in showcasing how towns, big and small, can lead the way in climate resilience and community-driven sustainability.

We have been lauded for our vibrant environmental leadership—ranging from community clean-ups, sensory parks, community gardens, the Ripple and Cascade Projects, to the Ship-to-Reef reef creation project in Killala Bay—driven by more than a dozen local initiatives.

We’d like to give a massive THANK YOU to all the amazing community groups who have been part of this initiative. This recognition is a true testament to the incredible work we are achieving together as a town.
