Celebrating Water Heritage Day 2025 on the River Moy

On Sunday, August 24th, we marked Water Heritage Day 2025 with a very special community event in Ballina. Beginning at The Downhill beside the Twin Trees Hotel, participants gathered for a guided walk along the banks of the River Moy, led by Community Water Officer, Éanna Hyland.

As we walked, Éanna shared fascinating insights into the Moy’s diverse ecosystems and the many species of wildlife that call it home. The tour offered not just a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of this iconic river, but also to reflect on how it has shaped Ballina’s landscape and community life for centuries.

The afternoon continued at the Mary Robinson Centre, where light refreshments were followed by an engaging talk from local historian, Eddie Melvin. Eddie traced the River Moy’s pivotal role in Ballina’s development, from its earliest settlements to its influence on trade, culture, and everyday life.

This free community event was a true celebration of the Moy — honouring both its environmental importance and its historical legacy. It was made possible through the support of the Local Authority Waters Programme, and we are grateful to all who joined us for an afternoon of learning, connection, and appreciation of one of Mayo’s most treasured rivers.
