About The Mary Robinson Centre

First mooted by local community members in 2008, the project has been developed in partnership with Mayo County Council and NUI Galway, committed to realising their shared vision to develop a tourism and education centre in Mary Robinson’s home town of Ballina.  The core of this vision continues to be the tremendous gift of Mary Robinson’s archive to the West of Ireland, in particular for its scholarly value, and the opportunity to create academic and tourism activity in the North Mayo region.

From the beginning, the realisation of The Mary Robinson Centre and its activities to date have been supported by a supreme voluntary effort, most particularly in the town of Ballina and amongst its global diaspora, who have given this project momentum and made it a truly collaborative project.  In 2020, at the Centre’s International Human Rights Lecture, Ballina Chamber of Commerce and the wider community committed to the Ballina – Green Town initiative, designed to pave a sustainable, environmentally aware future for Ballina, in partnership with The Mary Robinson Centre and inspired by Mary Robinson and her work.
